SAQA launches a National Career Advice Helpline
The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) has established a career advice helpline, the NQF and Career Advice Helpline. This nationally accessible service will be available to people of all ages and can be accessed by phone, SMS, website, e-mail, letter, or in person. This means that anyone – for example, a learner needing to choose school subjects, a school leaver wanting to study further, or a working person wanting to switch to a different kind of work – can find the information and support to take the next step. The aim is to equip learners with the information to navigate work and study paths, to enable them to increase their employability and to manage their own career development. In addition, it provides a resource for career advisers and others in providing career advice to learners.
The establishment of this share call helpline follows the 2010/11 budget speech of Dr. Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education and Training, in which he announced that he had tasked SAQA with establishing a national career advice helpline.
“Making a career choice is one of the most important decisions a learner makes. It is therefore imperative that learners have the necessary information and get advice before making decisions,” said the Director of the helpline and of SAQA’s Career Advice Service, Mr Paul West. The NQF and Career Advice Helpline is part of SAQA’s mandate to oversee the development and implementation of the NQF. One of the objectives of the NQF is to facilitate access to, and mobility and progression within, education, training and career paths. The helpline is based on a lifelong learning framework and on the values of equal opportunity and social justice.
