Sri Lanka formulates its NQF
The Higher Education Ministry in Sri Lanka is in the process of preparing a policy framework that will prevent bogus education institutions from granting qualifications. This comes after the decision to ban ten such institutions following recommendations by a cabinet sub-committee appointed to look into the matter.
While formulating a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) the government of Sri Lanka is also in the process of amending the country's University Act in a way that will not allow bogus institutions to confer doctorates and degrees in the future.
The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is an island country in South Asia, located about 31 kilometres off the southern coast of India. It is home to around twenty million people. Sri Lanka is said to have one of the most literate populations amongst developing nations. It has a literacy rate of 90,5 % - men and 82,4 % - female, and these percentages of the total population have had secondary education.
The country has an education system that ensures that nine years of compulsory schooling for every child is in place, with 99% of the children entering the first grade. Sri Lanka has around 16 public universities. The free education system ensures that primary to tertiary education is provided free of charge to the country's citizens.
