What does the HEQC look at in order to accredit programmes?

For new programmes, the HEQC uses a set of nine criteria, each with a number of minimum standards. The broad criteria that are used to evaluate whether the programme meets the requirements for accreditation are:

  • Programme design, including the complexity of the programme depending on its NQF level
  • Student recruitment, admission and selection policies and procedures, including those that will ensure that historically disadvantaged students get access to the institution.
  • Staffing qualifications, experience and seniority
  • Teaching and learning strategy
  • Student assessment policies and procedures
  • Infrastructure and library resources
  • Programme administrative services
  • Postgraduate policies, procedures and regulations (where applicable)
