CHE
What is the role of the Council on Higher Education (CHE)?
The CHE advises the Minister of Education on higher education policy matters, monitors the transformation of higher education in South Africa, and is responsible for quality assurance and quality promotion in higher education. In relation to the latter, the CHE - through its permanent committee, the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) - evaluates how both private and public higher education institutions maintain quality at institutional and programme levels.
The HEQC uses different methods to evaluate whether institutions maintain quality at their institutions and programmes. These methods are institutional audits, programme accreditation, national reviews and quality promotion and capacity development.
