2010 SWC has enabled many new entrepreneurs
Mon, 31 May 2010 13:56
The world’s biggest sporting event is now only days away. One can feel and see the excitement everywhere. Preparing for an event of this magnitude has challenged thousands if not millions of South Africans to sharpen their skills. This is one of the legacies of the world cup that in years to come will probably not be as visible as the wonderful new soccer stadiums and as emotional as the memories of the opening and final matches but undoubtedly the improved skills base will be one of the greatest and most valuable legacies of the 2010 soccer world cup. In thinking about what skills have been specifically developed and or improved there are again the more obvious new skills attained by those thousands of dedicated South Africans that have worked tirelessly across the nation building and improving the infrastructure that we are all now so proud of. However it goes way beyond that and when one thinks about how this event has impacted the entire fabric of our society it becomes clearer as to just how significant the skills development impact has been. Two areas of learning that are going to ensure the 2010 legacy is felt in many years to come are entrepreneurial skills and service skills. The 2010 SWC has enabled many new entrepreneurs to find a space and yes some have not succeeded but many, many have and will go on to become significant businesses and employers of South Africans in the years ahead. Similarly the honing of our service skills across the country will of course ensure that all the visitors will have a fabulous time in our beautiful country but it won’t end there and I have no doubt that this paradigm shift in service that we will take in June and July will stay with us far into the future.
Sometimes it takes an outside intervention like the 2010 SWC to get us going. It will be a long time before this type of event pushes the nation to rapidly grow its skills base but this does not mean we should sit back and wait. Let’s all see the 2010 SWC as the beginning of a new and enduring commitment to life-long learning.
