Passion or reward?
Fri, 12 Feb 2010 13:10
This week I was asked by one of the NQF helpdesk advisors to join her in a discussion with a young man who had come to ask advice about which qualification he should enroll for. What was interesting for me and as such I believe worth sharing, was the fact that he was looking for advice not only on qualifications as they applied in the South African context but also their relevance and acceptability in Africa and the rest of the world. The discussion went further to which professional bodies and their related designations were recognised in Africa and globally.
While we certainly made every effort to provide him with valuable information to assist him in his decision it became apparent that no matter how much we would love to be able to have all the answers it just not possible when you take a global view.
As we explored the matter further I asked the young man about his choice of career and if it was really his passion and what became apparent was that he had not reflected deeply on this question and in fact had selected a profession where he believed there was the highest financial reward.
Decisions about qualification choices are very difficult to make and wrong decisions can be very costly in the long run.
We urge you and those who seek your opinion, to undertake a qualification that is NQF accredited. This will certainly ensure that many future problems would be avoided. However knowing where you want to be in 5, 10 and 20 years time is just as important.
Take time to do sufficient homework before taking the plunge. It worth it in the end.
The NQF helpdesk team is ready to help should you or a member of you family or friend have a qualification related question.
We look forward to being of assistance.
